Region Championships and October 12-17

This week is the Region Championships.  For some of you JV runners this might be your last XC race depending on how the post season turns out, and whether you stick around until the end of the season or not.  The goal is for everyone to give their very best effort of the season so far.  Time to take all of that time and training and put to use.  This should be your focus the next couple of days!

Those who wish to get credit from Coach Barnes for PE for doing the season, or those who might be in line for a Varsity Letter award, need to plan on being at practice at least through the JV Classic on October 24th and/or State (October 27th).  The JV State meet will be October 31st in Spanish Fork as of right now, this is highly recommended even though it is officially post season.

We will have a Team Dinner Monday at 6:00 p.m. hosted by the Heintz/Quistberg, Sayre, Wilding, and Leavitt families at (13683 Eckhart Lane)  In the case of inclement weather, the dinner will be at the clubhouse at 4635 West Templar Drive, Riverton. The runners can bring $2.

Right now the weather is looking like rain several days, including Region, so prepare accordingly.

If anyone is planning on leaving for any of Fall Break, it is important (necessary for Varsity) to train hard while away and communicate this with the coaching staff.

October 5-10

Congrats to our Runners of the Week from last week!

(Kate, Claire, Noah, Abe)

The Sanpete Classic was a good meet for our team, lots of good races and even good times on a tough course.  Our Boys team took the wins in both Varsity and JV.  Our girls were 3rd with Varsity and 2nd with JV.

This week we will really focus on some solid workouts and preparing for Region Championships on October 13.

Thanks to the Leavitt, Gilham, and Bracken families for hosting last week's dinner. Thanks to all of the those who brought after race treats for the team on Thursday and those who made it to Sanpete to cheer on and support the team.

Sanpete Classic and September 28 - October

Congrats to our Runners of the Week from last week!

(Cierra, Virginia, Graidy, and Cache)

Juab Invite was a good meet for us overall as a team.  We had some good races, and learned a few lessons along the way.  Our Girls were 2nd and our boys tied with Timpview for the win, but lost the tiebreaker (6th runner).  We will now look forward to the Sanpete Classic on Thursday this week.  Another Golf Course race with a little more difficulty to it.  This is always one of our favorite meets and courses to attend. It will be our last meet before Region Championships.

Thanks to the Haynie, Sleater, Cazier, Carver, and K. Anderson Families for hosting last week's dinner. Thanks to all of the those who brought after race treats for the team on Saturday and those who made it to Nephi to cheer on and support the team.

Wahsatch Rendezvous and September 14-19

Congrats to our Runners of the Week from last week!

(Ivorie, Savanah, Jack, Austin)

We had a solid week this past week, and our team did great at the Park City AM Invite on Friday! This Invite was good for our team, having less teams than the last couple weeks and racing against competition that is very similar in ability and experience to us.  It was fun to come away with two close wins, and have so many of our athletes have good races.

This week we have the Wahsatch Rendezvous at Cottonwood Complex on Saturday.  The schedule is different than normal for the varsity races, so see the link below.

We appreciate the Carter, Dibble, and Jarrett families for hosting last week's dinner, and all who attended.  Thanks to all of the those who brought after race treats for the team on Friday, as well as those who made the drive to cheer and support at the meet early in the day.

August 24- 29, and UIAAA Invite

Congrats to our Runners of the Week from last week!

(Elise and Kimball)

We had a good past week of training, and racing at Park City Twilight Invite.  Girls Varsity 2nd, Boys Varsity 3rd, Girls JV 4th, and Boys JV 3rd.  A pretty solid 2nd week of racing for our young team.  We still have a lot of work to do, but we are definitely ahead of the past 2 seasons as of now.  Let's keep it going!

This week we have a full week of training, and the UIAAA Invite at Spanish Fork Sports Complex on Saturday morning.  Schedule

The majority of athletes have been showing up to practice and working hard, but we still have a few athletes that keep no-showing practice without any communication.  A reminder to parents and athletes that this is not okay and to please communicate.  We would like the athlete to take on that responsibility initially.

We appreciate the Patterson, Wright, Leavitt, and Preece families for hosting our team dinner last week, and all who attended.  We also appreciate all of the those who brought after race treats for the team this week and last, as well as those who came to cheer and support.

We will have a Team Dinner hosted by the Meservy, Z and A Anderson, Lund, and Lingwall families on Friday night at 6:00pm at (4832 W Grand View Peak Drive, Riverton).  Athletes can bring $2 to contribute.

Pre-Region, Feber, and August 10-15

We had a great camp this past week at our Team Camp!  We hope that more of you will make it a priority in the future and come join us.  The 33 athletes and 4 coaches that went had a great time, made some good memories, and conquered some tough runs. And we are hoping to use some of that momentum as we head into our competitions this week.

We are starting out with a double meet week this week with Pre-Region on Wednesday evening and the Freber Invite on Saturday morning.  The race schedules are linked to the meet name below.

We have lots of work to do this season, since a lot of the team didn't  hit their minimum mileage goals .  According to what has been reported, we only had 8 boys (an improvement from 2025) and 1 girl on the team who actually hit their minimum mileage goals for the summer.  In contrast to that we had over 40 athletes hit their goals 3 years ago. We can't make up lost mileage, but we can move forward and be consistent throughout the next 2 months. So buckle up and be prepared to get after it!

All Eligibility and Fees must be taken care of in order to compete!  The fees will be available to pay on Monday on Skyward or in the Main Office.

Practices are no longer optional, and it is expected that you are in attendance everyday in order to compete.

The TEAM STORE has been reopened this week.  The last 2 items on the store are our team warm-ups.

We will have a Team Dinner hosted by the Ballard, Lewis, Bytheway, and Stoddart families at (7443 W. Hall Crossing Drive) at 6:00pm on Tuesday.  Athletes can bring $2 to contribute.

Those needing a uniform will need to bring a screenshot of payment to Coach Barnes and must be completely eligible.  Coach Barnes will bring some uniforms to practice on Monday, and will send a message out on groupme if he has a window of time at the school on Monday to give out uniforms.

Make sure you are hydrating and eating good throughout the day so you will be prepared to do well at practice in the afternoons.

 Schedule

Monday - Monarch Meadows Park @ 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday - Monarch Meadows Park @ 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday - Pre-Region @ (Cottonwood Complex) Big Cottonwood Region Park 4300 S 1300 E  SLC.  All girls will race at 6:00pm and all boys will race at 6:45pm.  Bus will leave at 4:15 p.m. from the MRHS Gym

Thursday - Rosecrest Park @ 3:30 p.m.

Friday  - Rosecrest Park @ 7:00 a.m.

Team Camp and August 3-8

This week is the official start of the season, with the first races happening across the State this weekend.  We will be at camp Monday - Wednesday, have practice Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, and may do an optional practice Saturday morning.

If you chose to not attend camp, then you are expected to train on your own and do similar mileage to what the rest of the team and all the coaching staff will be doing at camp.

Those going to camp, we will meet at 6:20am in the front of the High school tomorrow.  Check the Itinerary on the Overnight Travel Page, especially the camp checklist at the end.  Messages for camp will be sent on the Camp Groupme from here on out.

This is the last week of Summer Mileage, please report last week's mileage if you haven't done so.

Our first race will be at Pre-Region on August 12th with Girls racing at 6:00pm and Boys starting appox. 6:45pm.

Eligibility was due this week on Friday, please get this taken care of, if you haven't done so, so you do not have to miss out.  We talked at our May 26th parent meeting about Eligibility being completed before summer started and most athletes are not done at the end of the summer.  This has to be done to be on any sports team and be able to compete.  See the Eligibility Page above for links and other info.  Participation Fees and Uniform Fees will be added to pay on Skyward or in the Main Office once Eligibility is complete and we have a team roster later this week after camp.  These fees will need to be paid before the first race next week.

Here is the FORM so we have needed sizes for Uniforms and Warm-up Shirts, we still are missing half of you.  Please do this ASAP!

For those needing a uniform, we will give those out starting next Monday in Coach Barnes' classroom.   You will need a screenshot of your payment receipt and Eligibility MUST be completed.

We will start transitioning into mostly afternoon practices next week at 3:30pm, these are not optional.  The following week (school starts) we will go to all afternoon practices Monday through Thursday. Please plan accordingly.

Team Spike Night will be at Second Wind Running Store (formerly Run Gr8) on August 6, 6:00pm-7:30pm.

We are aware of the air quality issues with the current fire and heat conditions in the State, and will be monitoring it daily.

July 27- August 1

Thanks to all those who reported their mileage on time, and for those of you that helped remind teammates to be on task with that.

We hope you all had a good Pioneer Day, and it was good to see several of you out running some local races.

We will not do an official Time Trial this week, but we do an unofficial time trial at practice during the week.  We hope that this does not negatively effect anyone's plans if you were planning on a Time Trial like we have done in past years.  We look forward to camp on Monday next week, and preparing for our first race at Pre-Region on August 12th (which is like a time trial in itself, because everyone will race each other there).

A reminder to please get all eligibility requirements taken care of this week. The due date is Friday July 31 and the deadline is Friday August 7th, and we are 8 weeks into a 10 week summer already.  Fees will be added after we come back from camp next week, but RMA, grades, Birth Certificate, and physicals should all be taken care of ASAP.  Don't wait until August 7th to get this done!  A reminder to work on Eligibility.  Please fill out this FORM, so we have needed sizes for Uniforms and Warm-up Shirts.  We are still missing several of you.

We have seen several athletes who are missing practice and then running on their own, especially when they think that practice will be hard.  You will not get better or be a good athlete if you constantly run away from hard things!  We want to see athletes come to practice and run with the attitude that doing hard things will make you stronger.  We would love for all parents to encourage athletes to be at practice and push to be better.  Those who have been consistent in training this summer, and have been looking for ways to improve, have been seeing some big improvements already and will continue to do so.

Those going to camp: right now there are 34 of you, please get all paperwork turned in and fees paid. We still have a couple spots we could get some of you in if you want.  If anyone can, or would like to, go to camp that did not previously commit, please contact Coach Barnes ASAP and let him know you are able to attend. Camp fees have been added to Skyward for those who have committed, so please take care of those ASAP.  Paper work (both forms with the Medical one notarized, and copy of insurance card) are due Monday and no later than Thursday this week.  Coach Barnes has to have this paperwork turned in before we leave to camp!

Please start getting all eligibility requirements taken care of in the next two weeks, the deadline will come very soon, we are 6 weeks into a 10 week summer.  Fees will be added at a later date (First of August), but  RMA, grades, and physicals should all be taken care of ASAP.   A reminder to please fill out this FORM so we have needed sizes for Uniforms and Warm-up Shirts.  Thanks to those who have already done this.

We have had the majority of athletes respond about XC Camp, but if you haven't done so please respond to the survey. Camp will be August 3-5.  HERE is the link.

We have to have final camp numbers this week.  We would highly recommend all of you going to camp, if you are able.  We have taken 36-40 athletes the past 3 years and that is the plan again.  Note: that we will not take runners to camp that cannot run 3 miles in at least 30 minutes, for time, safety, and liability reasons.

Thanks to all of those athletes who have been diligent in getting your mileage in and reporting it in a timely manner!  If you have been slacking in these things, it is time to pick it back up and and get on track, we are already 6 weeks into summer.  We will send out what has been reported on the groupmes.

Sunday, July 5, 2026

July 6-11

We hope that everyone had a happy Independence Day and you are all ready to get back to training.  Good work to those who trained, and even raced, during moratorium last week.

We would like to reiterate the importance of being at practice!  Those who have been committed and coming regularly are seeing the positive results.  Some of you are finding a lot of reasons to not show up or train daily, even when you are at home, and this will never pay off and only gets you behind or sometimes injured.  We try to be very flexible with summer practices, especially compared to other fall sports or even other school XC teams, so that you can have family time and vacations, etc.  However, some tend to take advantage of this flexibility and are not committed enough, and you are starting to find yourself behind already.  Make practices and your training a priority.  Also, make any team challenges a priority.  Your training and participation is a lot bigger than you, it benefits the entire team and program.  Be committed and be a contributor to the good of the team.  This starts with your commitment, attitude, and communication.

The Camp Survey needs to be filled out ASAP  HERE

We have to have final camp numbers by next week, because we have to figure cost based on bus and driver, Dorms, Meals, -order t-shirts, and pay for District Insurance.  We would highly recommend all of you going to camp, if you are able.  We have taken 36-40 athletes the past 4 years and that is the plan again.

Schedule

Monday - Jordan River Parkway @ 7:10 a.m.

Tuesday - Butterfield Park @ 7:00 a.m.

Wednesday - Rosecrest Park @ 7:00 a.m.

Thursday - Blackridge Reservoir @ 7:10 a.m.

Friday - Monarch Meadows Park @ 7:00 a.m.

Saturday - On your own

Thanks to all of those athletes who have been diligent in getting your mileage in and reporting it in a timely manner!  If you have been slacking in these things, it is time to pick it back up and and get on track, we are already 5 weeks into summer.  We will send out what has been reported on the groupmes.

Also, the daily temps are starting to go up this week, so hydrate really well so you can feel good and train good.

Sunday, June 21, 2026

June 22-27

Please get your mileage reported ASAP, if you haven't already done so.  This should have be done right after the last run of the week for you.

We have seen a lot of our young team working hard the past couple weeks, so keep it up!  Remember we are trying to build good habits in all we are doing.

Some of you are starting to roller coaster your mileage and this will either get you behind, or beat you up and get you injured, which will get you behind.  Only 7 weeks left of the summer so take advantage of your time to train.  Consistency is the key!  Returners should be hitting 6 days a week and rookies 5 days, every week, regardless of if you are at practice or on some vacation.  Don't slack during moratorium next week!  Again, remember to keep building good habits.

Also, we need to make sure we are taking good care of our bodies so we don't get beat up (drinking plenty of water, stretching, rolling out, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, eating enough, etc..).  If you are having any issues please talk to the coaches so we can help you before it turns into something bigger.

We would like to encourage athletes to run some road races (5k and 10ks) throughout the summer, these are fun and great training.  Congrats to those who ran the Herriman Yeti Run on Saturday, especially to Ty, Sam, and Seth for taking 1-3 overall!

Schedule

Monday - Butterfield Park @ 7:00 a.m.

Tuesday - High School @ 7:00 a.m.

June 15-20

If you haven't done so yet, get registered!  We are are trying to build a roster and some of you aren't on it yet, because your summer registration isn't finished.  Please do so ASAP.  Register at Summer Registration  Thanks to all of those who have already taken care of this!

We are excited about our new young team, and appreciated the efforts at practice last week.  Keep it up, be consistent in your training, and you we see gains and improvements as the summer goes on.

Mileage Teams are up, and can be found on the link on the Coaches Contact Page above.  You will all have a coach you need to report to each week, and you will need to do this as soon as you can after your last run of the week every week.  A screen shot of your Strava weekly mileage and a brief explanation is appropriate to email the coach.  You will report this weeks', last weeks', and June 1-6 if you ran that week. If you are not on the roster than you haven't event registered for summer and will need to do this ASAP if you want your mileage counted (this should have been done prior to June 8th), and returners should know better.

Make sure you are logging your mileage every day.  If you haven't created an account on Strava and/or made it private please do so.  If you need to clean up your Strava because you have unneeded followers, please do so.  Make sure you get in the Mountain Ridge XC club, so that we can all follow each other and support each other.  If you are an athlete and haven't been added to the groupme, then have someone on the team that is in the groupme add you. If you are a parent and need to be added to the parent groupme please email Coach Peterson.

If you have friends still wanting to come out, tell them to hurry and start now.  Refer them to the previous posts for how to sign up.  If you haven't signed up, for whatever reason, get it done so we can have you at practice and start counting your mileage.

Remember, when you are around we expect you at practice, this will be, by far, the most beneficial to you.  If you are out of town, you should be running on your own everyday.  The goal right now is 5 days a week for new runners, and as the summer goes on and the season starts we will be doing 6 days. Most returning athletes should plan on 6 days a week as of now.

XC Practices Start, June 8-13

We start our summer training on Monday June 8th.  The cost for summer is $85.  Please register, Summer Registration, prior to Monday June 8th and the start of summer training.

Remember, when you are around we expect you at practice, this will be by far of the most benefit to you. Find opportunities to be at practice!  If you are out of town you should be running on your own every day.  The goal right now is 5 days a week for new runners, and as the summer goes on and the season starts, most athletes should plan on 6 days a week.  Be mindful of your mileage goals and try to achieve those every week, and have a plan to accomplish them.  Summer training will make or break your training and season, so be ready to work hard. Staying consistent will not only help you get in shape and achieve goals, but it will also help keep you healthy and hopefully injury free. We will not start out super light with our training because everyone should have been doing some running since the meeting on May 20.

Remember for those not there the first week, you still need to get signed up and pay ASAP, so that we can start building a roster.  We will assign you a coach to report mileage to by the first of the 2nd week.  Keep track of mileage and report the first week as soon as you are assigned a coach.

Always bring a water bottle to practice, and if you eat before you come make sure it is very light so you don't have digestion issues on the run.  Bring something to eat after practice as well, like an apple, banana, protein drink, granola bar, etc..  We will talk about nutrition the first week.

A reminder to work on Eligibility.  Please fill out this FORM so we needed have sizes for Uniforms and Warm-up Shirts.

Athlete/Parent Meeting

We will have a runner/parent meeting for those who would like to run Cross Country this coming season, on Tuesday May 26th at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Lecture Hall (across from the attendance office).  We invite those interested, to come and meet the coaches and learn about Summer XC and what you need to do to be part of the team for this Fall.  It is very important that you attend, or have a parent attend for you, so you know what is expected and what will be happening this summer and upcoming season.
